A family dog suffered eight wounds, including a bite to the head, after bravely defending his family from a mountain lion in their La Verne backyard.
Home surveillance video shows Mary Padres dog, “Rocky,” bolting past the pool and after the cat Monday night. The chase didn’t end in the backyard though. The German Shepherd mix kept on the cat, following up a hill behind the family’s home.

Even though they knew the cat was still out there, Padres said she and her family rushed to grab flashlights to find Rocky and bring him home.
"He stopped making any noises, he had been barking," Padres said. "That's when we got really scared and terrified...frantically we went and got our flashlights and went up to the hillside looking for him, call his name."
Padres said when her they found Rocky, she noticed a large hole on his head and rushed him to an emergency vet.
"There were bit marks in his throat, on his head that went all the way through - you can see to his skull, all the way down to his brain," Padres said, telling CBS L.A. that, in all, Rocky suffered eight large puncture wounds and needed 30 stitches to patch him up.
"Absolutely a hero and willing to put his life out there for us," Padres said. "[He] didn't event think twice about it. It's a blessing. We can't be more blessed, he's very special to us."
A GoFundMe has been setup to help the family pay for Rocky's surgery and post-surgery medication bills. So far, the community has raised $1,273 of the family's $3,000 goal.
The big cat remains at large and authorities are trying to determine if it poses a threat to other neighbors, CBS L.A. reported.
