LOS ANGELES (KNX) - A search warrant, four paws, and a keen nose added up to a multi-million-dollar drug bust in downtown Los Angeles.
Ventura County sheriff’s investigators asked the LAPD for assistance serving a warrant at an auto repair shop in downtown L.A. last Friday. The department called in one of their best officers for the job: Bosco, a two-year-old Dutch shepherd.
“He is very active, always happy to go to work,” said Capt. Lillian Carranza with the LAPD Gangs and Narcotics Division. “He did not disappoint on this occasion.”
Within 30 seconds of entering the building, Bosco zeroed in on one seemingly innocent object: a vending machine.
“When they opened it, it was more than just Coke in there,” Carranza said.
Inside the machine, investigators found 15 pounds of heroin, 2.2 pounds of fentanyl, 4 pistols, a military style semiautomatic rifle, and a lot of cash. Carranza estimates the total street value of the drugs at over $2.3 million.
Bosco has only been on the job for six months, but he’s already got three major drug seizures under his belt, Carranza said.
Since the drug bust is part of an ongoing investigation, the LAPD couldn’t provide further details. However, the department did confirm that Bosco got to play with a chew toy as a reward for a job well done.
