LOS ANGELES (KNX) - The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating allegations that the captain of the East L.A. sheriff’s station passed over what he called an “angry Black” sergeant for valued detective positions.
According to a memo uncovered by the L.A. Times yesterday, Capt. Pilar Chavez said that Sgt. Reginald Hoffman had “nothing coming to him” at the station ever since he testified about the existence of deputy gangs to an oversight committee. Chavez allegedly schemed to avoid promoting Hoffman by giving positions to Latino deputies instead.
An LASD spokesperson said the department has launched an investigation into the memo.
Hoffman previously sued the county last November, claiming he’d been denied promotions for years because of his race and his testimony about the Latino deputy gang within the East L.A. station, the Banditos. The gang has been implicated in lawsuits, shootings, and other investigations.
Eight other East L.A. deputies are currently suing their former colleagues, alleging racial discrimination, harassment, assault, and other damages by the Banditos. The lawsuit claims that during a September 2018 training session, Banditos members knocked two of the plaintiffs unconscious.
Another anonymous East L.A. deputy testified last August that Banditos members would withhold requests for backup from deputies they disliked and leave dead rats outside the homes of deputies who cooperated with investigations into the department.
