LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Los Angeles Unified School District Officials announced Saturday that students will be prohibited from wearing cloth face masks starting Monday.

Going forward, all LAUSD students must wear “well-fitted, non-cloth masks with a nose wire” at all times on-campus, including outdoors. District officials said surgical masks or higher-grade medical masks were acceptable, and that compliant masks would be made available by schools upon student request.

"Our in-school [coronavirus infection] rates have dropped but we are continuing to be diligent and agile in creating the safest learning environment," Shannon Haber, a spokesperson for LAUSD, told The Los Angeles Times.

The move to ban cloth masks was based on guidance set forth by L.A. County public health officials, Haber told The Times.

LAUSD does allow exemptions to the mask requirement for students who have disabilities, medical or mental-health conditions that render them unable to wear a face mask.
