The deadline for Los Angeles School District teachers and staffers to be fully vaccinated has been extended.
Teachers and staffers now have until Nov. 15 to be fully vaccinated instead of the previously mandated Oct. 15, the district said.
Those who get a shot after Oct. 15, can return to work; however, Local 99 said if they don't complete the vaccination process by Nov. 15, they'll go on unpaid leave until they are fully vaccinated.
“We’re absolutely adamant about keeping our schools the safest possible environment — and vaccinations are clearly the pathway to keeping them safe,” Interim Superintendent Megan Reilly told the L.A. Times.
Reilly said those with exemptions would have to move to an available job assignment that doesn’t involve direct contact with other people. The Times reported some teachers with exemptions were assigned to the City of Angels program, which includes “remote, partly online instruction through a modified form of independent study.”
This comes after a Sept. 27 board meeting in which the L.A. Times reported that one in five LAUSD employees - about 12,000 workers - have not begun their immunization against COVID-19. The district did not provide a number of those who have medical or religious exemptions.
In early August, the school district announced that all employees in the school district must get the COVID-19 vaccine.
