LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The Los Angeles Unified School District’s mask mandate is still going strong even though Monday marked the first day many students and school staff in California would no longer be required to wear a mask indoors.

LAUSD will be keeping its indoor mask mandate in place for all schools until at least Wednesday, according to officials.

The district shared on social media that it is working to transition from a mandatory indoor mask mandate to a strong recommendation.

“I am 100 percent committed to upholding our science-based approach to COVID-19 protocols,” LAUSD’s new Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said in a statement he shared on social media. “I strongly support amending Los Angeles Unified’s previously negotiated agreements to align with current health guidance released by the State of California and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.”

The district and teachers' union are meeting Wednesday to negotiate the agreements.

Meanwhile, the following Southern California districts are now making masks  “strongly recommended” as opposed to “required,” according to NBC Los Angeles:
Downey USD
Rowland USD
Saugus USD
Santa Monica-Malibu USD
Pasadena USD
Alhambra USD
Las Virgenes USD
Beverly Hills USD
Glendale USD
Palos Verdes Peninsula USD
L.A. County aligned with the state in revising isolation and quarantine requirements for TK-12 schools.

Schools must continue to require COVID-19 cases to isolate, with a negative test being required to exit isolation after day five.
