LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Los Angeles Unified School District’s new superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, said Friday he was preparing to make an announcement regarding COVID-19 health and safety protocols at L.A. schools.

"The science backs the unmasking of kids in outdoor settings, the unmasking of adults in outdoor settings with appropriate precautions being taken," Carvalho told KTLA.

The superintendent said he would make an official announcement later on Friday about changes to school COVID policies, with new rules taking effect early next week.

“We need to acknowledge that positivity rates in our community and particularly in our schools are significantly low, the level of vaccination exceedingly high, particularly for 12 and older,” Carvalho said.
Carvalho’s announcement comes on the heels of a change in L.A. County’s masking rules announced Wednesday. Because daily COVID-19 hospitalization rates have remained below 2,500 for more than a week, masking at outdoor “mega” events and outdoor spaces at county K-12 schools and childcare facilities is now recommended, but no longer compulsory.

Masking indoors remains required across both L.A. County and California.
