Los Angeles International Airport officials are expecting 3 million travelers over the Fourth of July holiday period. But many of them are going nowhere amid a wave of delays and cancellations caused by severe weather across the country.
The Barnetts, a family from Upland, were huddled on the floor of terminal 7 Friday morning after their second attempted flight to Michigan was canceled. They’ve already missed the funeral they were traveling for, which happened yesterday.
“It’s disappointing. We wanted to get there and be with family, and everybody’s arriving, and it’s an unfortunate situation,” the family told KNX News’ Jon Baird.
The next flight available for the Barnetts was on Sunday, a full four days after their originally-scheduled Wednesday departure. Instead, they said they were considering renting a van and making the 34-hour drive to northern Michigan.
A luckier traveler told KNX News he was relieved to find out that his flight was on time.
“We’re going to Boston for a wedding, and you know, honestly I was really nervous yesterday, but so far so good, man,” he said.
With pandemic-era travel restrictions in the rear-view mirror, more travelers are hitting the road – and the skies – for the summer holidays. Doug Shupe, a spokesperson for AAA, said international travel is exploding, with hotel bookings and car rentals up 80% at international destinations compared to last year.
The Auto Club of Southern California expects more than 3.4 million Southern Californians will travel over the July 4 holiday weekend.
