Single-use plastic water bottles at LAX and the Van Nuys Airport are being phased out in favor of more sustainable materials.

According to a release from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), the conditions of the policy pertain to restaurants, stores, lounges and vending machines at the airports, which must switch to sustainable materials like aluminum, glass or compostable material.

Pre-packaged water of all sizes and types, including purified water, mineral water, carbonated or sparkling water, and electrolyte-enhanced water products, is subject to the policy.

Bottled water served onboard airplanes is exempt.

According to LAWA, 60 new hydration stations will be installed throughout LAX's terminals to provide travelers access to drinking water.

While the policy is effective immediately for LAWA and all new lease, concessions and operating agreements, businesses with current lease or concession agreements have until June 20, 2023 to phase out single-use plastic bottles.
