LONG BEACH, Calif. (KNX) — Long Beach health officials confirmed its first case of the omicron variant on Tuesday.
“We have confirmed the City's first case of COVID-19 with mutations consistent with the Omicron variant,” the Long Beach Health Department tweeted.
Health officials said the person infected was fully vaccinated and is asymptomatic. Officials also noted the person returned from an international trip on Nov. 29, but that they did not travel to the southern African region during the trip.
The health department said it received the confirmation Monday.
It comes as Los Angeles County announced they identified their third case. In this case, that person is fully vaccinated and traveled to West Africa. The first case in the county was reported Thursday and the second was reported Monday.
Officials said in a press release the Delta variant is still the “dominant strain of COVID-19 in Long Beach.”
“The Health Department urges everyone to become vaccinated and get their boosters if eligible. The more people who are vaccinated, the lower the chance that any variant, including Omicron, can get a foothold in our community.”
