Long Beach homeless man fatally shot, suspect at large

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KNX) — A homeless man shot at a Long Beach park last week has died while being treated at a hospital, authorities announced Wednesday.

Omar Akers, 33, was shot at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 in Gumbiner Park, located in the 800 block of East Seventh Street. He succumbed to his injuries over a week later, dying Tuesday, according to Long Beach police.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was in the park when an unknown suspect or suspects approached him and began shooting,” police said in a statement.
