BEAUMONT (CNS) - A man was fatally struck by a train as he walked along Union Pacific Railroad tracks in Beaumont, authorities said Friday.
The fatality occurred about 7:55 p.m. Thursday where the tracks meet Pennsylvania Avenue, just north of Third Street and south of Interstate 10, according to UPR and the Beaumont Police Department.
Authorities said that the man, whose identity was not immediately released, was hit by the Union Pacific train as it traveled east through the San Gorgonio Pass. It was unclear why he was on the tracks.
The train crew immediately brought the freighter to a stop. Nobody on board was injured.
Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the location within minutes and found the victim lying on the roadway, near the tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Beaumont police and Union Pacific police officers shut down the rail line to conduct a preliminary investigation. Pennsylvania Avenue was also closed at the location. The closures were lifted just after midnight Friday.
The investigation is ongoing.
