A man shot and killed by Los Angeles police officers in Van Nuys Sunday had been carrying “two bloody knives” as he charged toward officers, the city police department said.
The LAPD dispatched officers around 5 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about a man with a knife near Victory Blvd. and Matilija Ave., a spokesperson told KNX 1070.
Police said they attempted to deescalate the situation after locating the suspect, “continually asking the suspect to drop his weapon and peacefully end the situation.”
“The suspect failed to comply with the officers orders to drop the knife, and at some point, the suspect advanced toward the officers,” Sgt. Bruce Borihanh told reporters.
Sgt. Borihanh said police used “less lethal munitions” first, including discharging a foam round, before at least one officer fired their gun.
The unidentified man, who the department believes is in his 40s, died at the scene, according to paramedics. Officials have not named the man, saying they're awaiting notification of next of kin.No one else was injured.
Police collected the knives as evidence but said it was unclear whose blood might have been on the weapons.
Investigators reviewing body-cam footage said they had earlier received calls about the same man vandalizing tires and standing on a car. Multiple news outlets have reported that the individual was slashing tires in the area prior to police arriving on the scene.
The LAPD said Monday its investigation was ongoing.
