LOS ANGELES (KNX) - More than three dozen unhoused people will soon get to move into a brand-new apartment building in South L.A.

Named after the labor and civil rights leader, Dolores Huerta Apartments is the first permanent supportive housing project to be completed using money from the $185 million SDS Supportive Housing Fund.

The gleaming new building at 5215 S. Figueroa St. was built with a $6.6 million investment from the Supportive Housing Fund. Each studio unit includes a private living area, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. The building also includes a community room, outdoor eating area, atrium, onsite laundry service and bike racks.

Councilmember Curren Price said the building’s modular design saved a lot of time and money, reducing the price per unit from $600,000 to $200,000.

The complex will soon open its doors as a permanent home for 39 people who have been living on the streets.

Dolores Huerta herself joined Price, Mayor Karen Bass, Veronica Lewis of Homeless Outreach Program Integrated Care Systems, and SDS Capital Group CEO Deborah La Franchi to celebrate the building’s grand opening today.

“At least some more people will be off the street and into a place where they can be safe and they can be clean," Huerta said.

The Supportive Housing Fund aims to quickly finance and construct permanent supportive housing through a private equity model. The fund has financed eight permanent supportive housing projects in L.A. The Dolores Huerta Apartments is the first to be completed.

La Franchi announced today that the fund recently received an additional $25 million from investors, increasing the number of units they’ll be able to build to 2500 or more.
