A new campaign aims to get drivers to slow down on the road.

The “Better Slow Than Sorry” was launched Monday by the California Highway Patrol, California Department of Transportation, Automobile Club of Southern California, and the California Office of Traffic Safety.

The campaign features a new video, audio messages, and digital billboards that provide information regarding the benefits of slowing down on the road.

Doug Shupe at the Automobile Club of Southern California told KNX News the campaign comes at a critical time.

“It comes at an important time as we still have several weeks of summer left. We also have a lot of people who will head out on road trips and unfortunately, we’re heading in the wrong direction when it comes to speed-related crashes,” he said. “In 2021, 35 percent of all deadly crashes in California were speed-related and speed-related deaths are at a 14-year-high.“

He added that while many people won’t get the severity of the situation until they lose a loved one, he hopes the campaign will make them think twice before speeding.

“…By continually talking about this will make people think, ‘Do you want to lose your loved one that’s in your car? Do you want to cause heartbreak for another family because you’re going way too fast for road conditions or well above the speed limit?’” he said.

The campaign will run through the end of July.
