A newlywed couple in San Diego said their house was destroyed in Monday’s plane crash.
Cody and Courtney Campbell were enjoying their status as newlyweds, nesting in the home they had just purchased together in Santee in May. They’d worked hard to get it.
Both were at work Monday when a twin-engine plane crashed into their neighborhood, killing two people.
“We just got a bunch of phone calls, a bunch of text messages — immediately came home from work as quickly as we could,” Cody recalled to FOX 5.
A Cessna C340 crashed near the intersection of Greencastle and Jeremy streets after reportedly encountering issues earlier in the flight. As a result, two homes – including the Campbell’s – were destroyed and two people were killed.
“Your mind goes through all the different things: all the ‘what ifs,’ all the other scenarios that could have happened. And we’re just super grateful that – you know – that’s not the case, and that we are standing here today,” Courtney said.
The Campbells learned neighbors rushed to the couple’s rescue after the impact on their home before a close friend nearby informed them the couple was safe and at work.
The other house belonged to Phil and Maria Morris, FOX5 said. The couple was hospitalized with burns but is expected to recover. The crash killed their family dog and destroyed most of their belongings.
Along with the plane’s pilot, a beloved UPS truck driver, Steve Krueger, died when the plane crashed as he delivered packages to the neighborhood.
“With us kind of being new to the neighborhood, we didn’t really know the UPS driver as well as everybody else did, but everybody says that they knew Steve from his routes and that he was here all the time, so obviously our hearts, our thoughts go out to his family,” Cody said.
A GoFundMe for the couple had raised nearly $41,000 by Thursday afternoon.
