Gov. Newsom to deploy CA National Guard to help food banks

On Wednesday morning, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he is deploying the California National Guard to help food banks amid the federal government shutdown.

He also announced that he will be fast-tracking $80 million in state funds “ahead of funding delays triggered by the shutdown.”

“Trump’s failure isn’t abstract – it’s literally taking food out of people’s mouths,” a statement by the governor read. “This is serious, this is urgent – and requires immediate action. Millions of Americans rely on food benefits to feed their families, and while Republicans in Washington drag their feet, California is stepping up once again to fill in the gaps.”

Newsom added that the California National Guard would not be acting as law enforcement.

KNX News has reached out to the governor's office to see how the money will be spent and when the National Guard will be showing up at the food banks. We are waiting to hear back.
