ANAHEIM, Calif. (KNX) — A strike by Orange County sanitation workers has entered its second week. At least one local city is considering declaring a local emergency to get services up and running again.
The strike includes 400 employees of Republic Services, responsible for collecting trash in cities across north and northwest Orange County and operating waste management facilities in Anaheim and Huntington Beach. Members of Teamsters Local 396 have been picketing since Thursday, objecting to alleged unfair labor practices in negotiating a new employment contract.
In addition to Huntington Beach and Anaheim, affected communities included Brea, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Placenta, Villa Park, and Yorba Linda.
Republic Services and the union are set to resume talks next Tuesday, but a timeline for when the strike might end is not yet known.
Huntington Beach leaders are considering declaring a local emergency to deal with disruptions in trash collection, according to a city news release. Details of that plan will be set at a special meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
