Orange County Sheriff’s Department handed out its first “body-worn cameras” to patrol deputies in Yorba Linda on Monday.

The new equipment is the result of several years of behind-the-scenes efforts to implement a body-worn camera program for police.

Yorba Linda is the first of the sheriff's department’s 13 contract cities to deploy the body cameras, the Orange County Register reported.

“We just want to make sure that when we implement this technology it’s done in a strategic manner,” Yorba Linda City Capt. Cory Martino said. “We’ve beta-tested several different programs; we feel this is the best one.”

In 2015, Anaheim became the first police department in the United States to use body-worn cameras. Fullerton and Irvine departments have followed since.

Sergeant Matthew Timmins said only a handful of deputies wore the body cameras for their day shifts, while the rest of the deputies will get their cameras next week.

Timmins added that by the end of 2022, the program will be fully implemented with more than 1,000 cameras aiding patrol operations, investigative divisions, and some supervisors.
