PASADENA, Calif. (KNX) — Two people died in Pasadena Tuesday, following a complicated string of events in the Daisy-Villa neighborhood of east Pasadena that resulted in two people briefly being being held hostage.
Police said the situation began around 2:30 p.m. with the discovery of a dead 70-year-old man on N Sunnyslope Avenue near E Villa Street.
Police said they chased after someone they believed to be a suspect, who unsuccessfully attempted to carjack a woman — holding her against her will — to get away from officers, according to Pasadena Police Chief John Perez.
The suspect ran away from the car and through the neighborhood, "engaging in gunfire with police" and unsuccessfully attempting a second carjacking, police said.
Ultimately, officers cornered the man near E Villa Street but said he fired at them, prompting the policemen to shoot back. The suspect died at the scene, although it was unclear if he had been struck by police gunfire.

Chief Perez told KNX multiple crime scenes stretch along E Villa Street and another two blocks in the area that have been closed to the public as police continue to investigate.
The two carjacking hostages are said to be ok following the situation and police said that the string on incidents does not seem to be connected to gang activity or the shooting of a teen in Pasadena last weekend.
This is a developing story. KNX will continue to update as details become available.
