SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles police asked for public help Tuesday to find a hit-and-run motorist who critically injured a 40-year-old pedestrian in South Los Angeles over the weekend.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the man was walking in a crosswalk on a ``Walk" signal around 6 a.m. Saturday at Central and Vernon avenues.

Police said a motorist driving a dark-colored vehicle at high speed southbound on Central Avenue ran through a red light and struck the pedestrian, who was thrown into the air land landed on his head. The motorist did not stop.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the location and took the pedestrian to a hospital, police said. The man underwent surgery for severe injuries and was listed in critical condition.

There was no additional information available on the car that struck the man, but police said it likely has front end, hood and possibly windshield damage. The LAPD released video of the collision in hopes of generating tips leading to the driver.

The city of Los Angeles has a standing reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a hit-and-run driver.
