Officers responded to multiple 911 calls about a man whose hands were covered in blood and carrying a knife, according to a news release from the Rialto Police Department.

Officers found the man holding the knife at the entrance of the gas station store while employees and patrons hid, police said.

The man then exited the store and allegedly charged at officers with the bloody knife, prompting officers to fire at him, according to police.

Officers said they immediately rendered medical aid to the suspect, but he died at the scene from his injuries.

No one inside the gas station was harmed and there were no other injuries reported.

The suspect’s name is being withheld until next of kin has been notified and Rialto police have not yet released the names of the officers involved.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney’s Office will investigate the shooting, police said.
