TEMESCAL VALLEY, Calif. (KNX) — Above all else, life in Southern California is defined by one thing: commuting. Most locals are used to enduring unpredictable traffic, hours-long jams, and miles of not-so-scenic freeway on a daily basis. But some have it worse than others.
Stacker.com has compiled a list of California cities with the worst commutes, utilizing data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Cities holding at least 5,000 working adults were ranked by longest average commute time as of the five-year estimate in 2019.

Among the Southern California cities that made the list were Riverside County’s Eastvale, Menifee, El Sobrante, Lake Elsinore, French Valley, and Temescal Valley ; Phelan, San Bernardino County; and Palmdale, Los Angeles County.
Still, Southern California commutes, on average, tend to be far better when compared with what neighbors to the north suffer through. Of the 20 cities on the list, 12 were located in Northern California, with seven in the Bay Area’s Contra Costa County alone.
Southern California’s worst city for commuting was Temescal Valley, ranked second in the state, with daily commutes averaging 49.8 minutes, and nearly 40% of workers spending more than an hour commuting a day.
