BELLFLOWER, Calif. (KNX) — A man who allegedly stabbed another in Bellflower was fatally shot early Thursday by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies went to the area of Artesia Boulevard and Downey Avenue shortly after midnight on Thursday after receiving reports that several vehicles had taken over the intersection and were doing “doughnuts,” according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

"Detectives have learned that deputies assigned to Lakewood Sheriff's Station were at the intersection ... regarding a street racing call," a statement said.

"While deputies were handling the street racing incident, they were flagged down by a victim who said a suspect had just stabbed him with a garden claw. The victim immediately pointed to the suspect, a male Hispanic in his 30s, and identified him as the person who stabbed him," the statement said.

Deputies attempted to detain the suspect, but he reportedly fled the scene southbound on Downey Avenue on foot. When deputies caught up with him, they said he “turned around and advanced on them” while swinging an “approximately three-foot-long garden claw with spikes on the end” at them. At this point, at least one deputy opened fire on the suspect.

The 32-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, was wounded multiple times and died at a nearby hospital.

The initial victim stabbed by the suspect was treated at the scene by paramedics. No deputies were injured during the incident.
