POMONA, Calif. (KNX) — One suspect was arrested and two remain at large following the shooting of a Pomona police officer during a barricade incident Thursday night.
Police on Friday recovered a semi-automatic handgun they believed was used in the shooting of the officer by the barricaded suspect. The shooter, believed to be in his 30s, was also shot by police.
The injured officer was driving through an alley shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday night near the 300 block of Orchid Lane when he encountered three suspects and attempted to make contact with them, according to Deputy Miguel Maza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is assisting Pomona police in investigating the incident.
Police said one suspect opened fire, which the officer returned. Both were injured, with the shooter barricading inside a nearby apartment. The other two suspects fled the area.
Both the shooter and the officer were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The shooter suffered gunshot wounds to his upper torso and was last reported in an unknown condition. The officer was expected to survive with non-life-threatening injuries to his right leg.
