TEMECULA, Calif. (KNX) — Temecula Mayor Matt Rahn announced Wednesday he would be running to represent California's 71st Assembly District in Sacramento in 2022.

The district includes southwestern Riverside County; the cities of Temecula, Murrieta, and Wildomar; and the eastern Orange County cities of Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita.

"Too many in Sacramento have lost touch with the hardworking people of Southern California," Rahn, a Republican, said in a statement on Wedensday. "High taxes, overregulation, erroding local control, and corruption have made government inefficient, business unaffordable, and sent thousands of Californians packing."

Rahn previously considered running for a state Senate seat as well as Temecula's congressional office following the indictment for former Rep. Duncan Hunter (R.-San Diego).

Rahn would run to replace outgoing Assemblymember Kelly Seyarto, who plans to run for state Senate in 2022. He has received endorsements from Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin, Sheriff Chad Bianco, Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, and Seyarto.

The 71st District seat will be on the ballot in the June 7 California primary. The top two finishers will face off in the Nov. 8 general election.
