A new and dangerous trend in street drugs is behind some upcoming changes for Los Angeles paramedics.
“Tranq” is a powerful horse tranquilizer increasingly being found cut into street drugs. L.A. Councilmember Traci Park introduced a motion in May calling on the city to train first responders on how to recognize and treat tranq.
“It is a drug that is 25 to 50 times more potent and lethal than fentanyl, and non-responsive to overdose reversal drugs like Narcan,” Park told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener.
She said she became concerned about the lack of training regarding tranq after learning that there were many cases where people who overdosed on it were given Narcan, which didn’t help the patients.
Park’s motion passed unanimously, and paramedics will likely undergo new training later this year.
