Two homes destroyed, one damaged in Whittier brush fire

WHITTIER, Calif. (KNX) — The "Sycamore Fire" burning in Whittier Thursday destroyed two homes and damaged a third as the wildfire burned through the 4800 block of Cinco View Drive, near Banyan Rim Drive.

The fire began around 2:30 p.m., just north of Sycamore Park in, quickly growing from two acres to four, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Fixed-wing aircraft and more than 200 firefighters were requested to
battle the flames, which quickly engulfed one home and caused extensive damage to another next door, according to City News Service.

Firefighters were still attacking the brush fire as of 5 p.m., and said firefighters were making good progress with about 20% containment of the fire.

No injuries have been reported.

The wildfire occurred during one of the hottest weeks of the year, with temperatures in Whittier hitting 82° and winds gusting up to 10 mph Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

A heat advisory remains in effect across the L.A. County coast, the San Gabriel Valley and San Fernando Valley, with highs between 85 and 90°, through 6 p.m. Sunday.
