18-year-old Eduard Huang had moved into his dorm at the University of Southern California when he lost his sense of smell.

Huang, who had been fully vaccinated, told ABC 7 he was setting up his cleaning supplies when he noticed he could not smell anything. After purchasing a rapid test from CVS, his suspicions were confirmed. The college freshman tested positive for COVID-19.

Huang said he was booked into a hotel by the university where he’ll stay on the COVID-19 floor, which is reserved for students who tested positive. He will isolate for the next 10 days.

He told ABC 7 that although the school recommended students do a test before move-in day, it did not mandate it for students to go on school grounds. The school, however, did require a PCR test result three days before arriving in Los Angeles.

Huang’s advice to other college students: wear a mask. “Even if you are vaccinated, and you think you're fine - you have the high chance that you will be fine - but please just wear masks to be safe. Because you might end up like me, who got infected with COVID right as I was moving into college."
