VENTURA, Calif. – Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today that the two individuals responsible for the death of a newborn have pled guilty to murder charges.
LISTEN:
In 2019, Andrea Torralba Camacho gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Diego at St. John's Medical Center in Oxnard. The pregnancy was the result of an alleged rape, and Andrea did not want the baby.
On the night of Diego's birth, Andrea, along with her partner, David Luna Villa, attempted to kill the baby. When their initial efforts failed, Villa took Diego in his arms and strangled him.
Once it seemed Diego was dead, Luna Villa placed him back in his bassinet and called for a nurse. Diego was taken to the intensive care unit and pronounced dead the next day.
Camacho pled guilty to second-degree murder. She is set to be sentenced on March 29, 2023.
Luna Villa pled guilty to willful, deliberate, and premeditated first-degree murder. He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 30, 2023.
"This case is a tragedy that was completely preventable," said Amber Lee, the prosecutor for the case. "California's Safe Surrender Baby Law would have allowed the defendants to walk away from the hospital and leave baby Diego in the care of medical staff. However, Villa chose to take the life of a defenseless infant who was less than a day old. It's truly heartbreaking that baby Diego's life was so callously disregarded."
