LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Many Los Angeles schools remained closed Wednesday as Service Employees International Union Local 99 marked day two in the strike against Los Angeles Unified School District.

The union, which represents 30,000 service employees such as janitors, bus drivers, and cafeteria workers, has been asking for a 30 percent raise.

“I heard rumors that we’re greedy, but we're not greedy,” one striker told KNX News. “The cost of living has gone so high.”

The union, which represents 30,000 service employees such as janitors, bus drivers, and cafeteria workers, has been asking for a 30 percent raise.

“I heard rumors that we’re greedy, but we're not greedy,” one striker told KNX News. “The cost of living has gone so high.”

The district made an offer last week that included a 5% wage increase retroactive to July 2021, another 5% increase retroactive to July 2022 and another 5% increase effective July 2023 according to City News Service.

The deal also included a 4% bonus in 2022-23 and a 5% bonus in 2023-24.

On Monday, Superintendent Carvalho said the district offered a 23% salary increase with a 3% "cash-in-hand bonus."

During a press conference at Polytechnic High School, Scott Mandel with United Teacher Los Angeles, who has been striking with SEIU in solidarity, claimed the district is being stingy.

“The superintendent says, ‘oh, wait a minute, my accountant says there's not 4.9 billion or where they get that, you go bankrupt,’” he said. “You know where we got to figure 4.9 billion of our reserves? From the district.”

While no new negotiations have been scheduled, Carvalho said district officials are ready to return to the bargaining table at any time.
