LOS ANGELES (CNS) — A motorist driving the wrong way on a freeway and colliding with a California Highway Patrol officer was suspected by police of driving under the influence on Thursday.
CHP officers responded at 2:15 a.m. to the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway and Arlington Avenue regarding calls of a person driving the wrong way on the freeway and attempted to detain the driver, said CHP Officer Patrick Kimball.

The motorist and a CHP patrol unit collided, leaving the officer with minor injuries, Kimball said.
Broadcast reports said the officer intentionally crashed the patrol car into the wrong way driver in order to stop the driver but CHP did not verify that.
The motorist, who was said to be "conscious but breathing" after the crash, was arrested and charged with DUI.
The collision closed the freeway for several hours as crews worked to clear the freeway of debris.
