An Oakland resident and San Francisco 49ers fan is in a medically induced coma following an apparent beating during last weekend's NFC Championship Game in Inglewood.
The Inglewood Police Department told KCBS Radio on Wednesday that Daniel Luna, the 40-year-old owner of Mistura on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, was hospitalized at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Luna, wearing a 49ers jersey and black pants, was brought to the hospital on Sunday after paramedics discovered him shortly after 4 p.m. in one of the SoFi Stadium parking lots, about 30 minutes into the Los Angeles Rams' eventual 20-17 win over the 49ers. Emergency room staff told police at around 6:30 p.m. that Luna had sustained injuries suggesting he was assaulted.
"In speaking with emergency room personnel, we do believe that his injuries are trauma-based to the facial area and to the upper body," Inglewood Police Lt. Geoffrey Meeks told KCBS Radio's Melissa Culross on Wednesday night.
Meeks said that police don't believe Luna was the victim of a robbery. Inglewood police are "actively working with SoFi Stadium security" to uncover surveillance video of the alleged assault and attempt to identify "someone or people" who know how Luna sustained his injuries.
SoFi Stadium, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, the 49ers and the NFL didn't respond to KCBS Radio's emailed requests for comment prior to publication on Wednesday night.
The Los Angeles Times first reported on Luna's condition on Wednesday night.
More than 70,000 fans attended the NFC Championship Game, many of whom were rooting for the 49ers. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday, that the preponderance of 49ers fans was "one of the coolest things I've seen in sports."
Meeks told KCBS Radio that police "have not uncovered any information" indicating Luna was targeted because he was rooting for the 49ers.
Luna's restaurant website on Wednesday said Mistura was "temporarily closed." The website didn't list a reason for the closure.
