If you bought an AirWick Fresh New Day air freshener between March and September in the U.S. or the Caribbean, you may have bought a dangerously faulty product.
The aerosol cans left the factory without a corrosion inhibitor. Corrosion can cause the cannister to deteriorate and, without the inhibitor’s protection, the cannister could rupture, causing the user to wound themselves either by cutting themselves on the ruptured cannister or perhaps suffering a skin or eye irritant due to spray leakage.
Due to this oversight, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that AirWick’s parent company Reckitt had issued a recall for any cannister with the batch code B22077-NJ2 stamped on the bottom.
"Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled air fresheners, wrap the product in several layers of paper, and dispose in accordance with state and local requirements," the CPSC wrote.
While no injuries have been reported thus far, five cannisters have been reported as leaking, including two fully ruptured cans.
If you bought an AirWick air freshener that has been recalled, you can get a voucher for a free replacement from Reckitt by calling the consumer relations hotline at 1-800-228-4722 and submitting a photo of the can with the batch number visible.
