A Colorado man who survived an avalanche that claimed the life of one of his friends, is seeking help in locating his dog, who is believed to have survived the slide.

Jacob Dalbey, of Carbondale, and two friends were scouting a place in the Rapid Creek drainage on March 17 when the avalanche occurred.

Denver 7 reported that the avalanche dropped 2,500 vertical feet, breaking around four to six feet deep and 400 feet wide. The avalanche claimed the life of one of his traveling companions, left Dalbey buried under the snow except for his right hand, and resulted in his dog, Ullr, going missing.

Dalbey was able to dig his way free and trigger an SOS feature on his equipment, leading to a helicopter spotting and rescuing him at around 12:40 a.m.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center shared that all three of the friends were fitted with avalanche safety equipment at the time of the snow slide. Dalbey and one of the friends were also reportedly wearing avalanche airbag backpacks.

The center also noted that the three were considered very experienced with varying levels of advanced recreational or professional avalanche training.

However, while Dalbey was brought to a local hospital, his furry friend has since gone missing.

Dalbey said it was routine for him to bring Ullr on the excursion with him. The 7-year-old border collie mix is also part wolf, and the two have been together since March 2016, Dalbey shared.

The Red Hill Animal Center has posted on its Facebook page about Ullr going missing, asking for those in the area to be on the lookout for the furry friend.

“I think in this instance, he’s probably hiding from people, you know, and just looking for me, wondering where I am. But he’s super friendly. He’s a big dog, and he looks mean, and he’s not. He’s so cuddly and such a lovey, very sensitive dog.” Dalbey shared with Denver 7.
