Earlier this month, U.S. officials warned that the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t over and as of Saturday, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky has tested positive herself.

According to CBS News, the CDC announced Saturday that Walensky tested positive Friday night. She is reportedly experiencing mild symptoms, said the agency in a statement.

Walensky is up to date with her COVID-19 vaccines, the statement confirmed. This means that she had received her primary series and the most recent booster dose. Walensky is isolating at home and planned to participate in meetings virtually, per the CDC.

Vaccines have helped the U.S. ease out of pandemic lockdowns and mask orders, and Pfizer reportedly indicated this week it has plans to start charging for the shots once the U.S. government stops paying for them. However, an emergency declaration regarding the pandemic was again extended this month.

“We have seen an increase in COVID infections, hospitalizations, and deaths each of the last two winters,” Dr. Ashish Jha, COVID-19 response coordinator for the White House, said the week of Oct. 14. He added that COVID-19 trends in Australia this winter indicate there could be another U.S. wave of this virus this holiday season.

Updated booster shots were rolled out last month and are available for free in the U.S.
