LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Mask mandates will continue on flights, trains, and public transportation until at least April 18 according to a Thursday update from the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The requirement was set to expire on March 18, according to NBC News, after it had previously been extended twice by the agencies.
“At CDC’s recommendation, TSA will extend the security directive for mask use on public transportation and transportation hubs for one month, through April 18,” TSA said in a statement.
The agency said that in the time leading up to April 18, the CDC and government agencies will work to update policy framework for “when, and under what circumstances, masks should be required in the public transportation corridor.”
That revised framework, TSA said, will be based on COVID-19 community levels, risk of new variants, national data, and the latest science.
In anticipation of heavy travel this spring, TSA shared tips Wednesday for safe travel and reducing risk of COVID-19 exposure.
“We are prepared and ready for a busy spring, and are doing our part to ensure the traveling public is safe and secure by continuing to deploy new technologies within the checkpoint that enhance security, reduce physical contact and improve the traveling experience,” the agency said.
“We just ask travelers to do their part by being respectful to each other and those who work in the transportation sector – from our officers to airport workers and flight crew.”
