Cedars-Sinai develops AI that can predict heart attacks

It's the future. Your doctor enters the room, looks at his watch, and confidently says, "You're going to have a heart attack soon."

This sci-fi-esque scenario may not be far off, thanks to an artificial intelligence tool being developed at Cedars-Sinai.

Piotr Slomka, Director of Innovation in Imaging at Cedars, tells KNX News his team has developed a novel deep learning AI tool that "moves us one step closer to predict if or when a patient might experience a heart attack or another heart-related problem."

By combining a patient's personal data, imaging, and a collection of relevant medical stats and facts, this technology allows a skilled doctor to more accurately and quickly diagnose a problem in an individualized way.

Dr. Slomka says the technology can even go as far as to provide a graph that visualizes for the patient "how that risk [for heart problems] changes over time" "..say over six months, one year, five years," he continued.

So, just how soon will patients be seeing this tech in use? Dr. Slomka says Cedars plans to start running trials, and if things go well, "we'll see."

With successful trials, Dr. Slomka is optimistic that the technology will have use cases across many other medical fields. He looks forward to working with them to bring the technology to the broader population.

And for those wondering what happens if and when the doctor disagrees with the technology, Dr. Slomka says, "I think it will always be the doctor making these decisions." He believes AI is simply another tool to help doctors give more precise answers.
