Congress has taken a significant step to improve childhood safety in homes across the U. S. with the passage of the STURDY Act.
KNX News's Pete Demetriou reports the ruling applies to items in the home or office that are at risk of tipping over and trapping or injuring children and seniors.
Dean Reese, the CEO of Ready America, a safety preparation company, says the protocols homeowners and builders must follow will reduce a staggering yearly death toll.
According to Reese, over 400 children are killed or severely injured by climbing on furniture, "trying to get something that they think is attractive to them, and unfortunately... pull down the furniture on top of themselves."
A particular strap will be available for purchase with an adhesive on one end, which applies to a dresser, cabinet, big screen T. V., and the like.
The other end of the strap has a bolt or screw to attach the object to a stud in the wall.
Reese says while such precautions are common in earthquake areas, a national standard will help save lives and prevent injuries.
STURDY is an acronym for "Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth."
