Californians who were following one of Mother Nature’s most famous and patriotic love stories did not get the ending they were hoping for, which so often happens in the wild.

LISTEN:

Jackie and Shadow, a pair of bald eagles living in Big Bear Valley, can count followers of their exploits in the six figures thanks to nest cams that stream their lives to the world.

However, as the pair’s fans eagerly awaited the entry into the world of a new generation of eagles, Jackie and Shadow abandoned their nest, leaving two unhatched eggs behind.

Now, Friends of Big Bear Valley, an animal enthusiast group, says the eggs have fallen victim to predators, but they also relayed that Jackie and Shadow would not have abandoned healthy eggs.

“If they developed at all, it was minimal,” Friends of Big Bear Valley executive director Sandy Steers said in a statement. “Whatever Jackie and Shadow were doing, not being on the nest didn’t have an impact on the eggs. Because up until when the eggs were 30 days old, they were sitting on the nest full time and trading back and forth. By this time, the egg would’ve been fully developed. So the eggs had already stopped developing.”

The group believes ravens were the likely culprits who feasted on the eggs.
