SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – At around $3.66 on average, gas prices are down nationwide this week compared to one year ago, when they were more than $4, according to AAA. However, some counties still have prices over $5.
One of those counties is Maricopa County, Ariz. In the nation’s fourth most populated county – and home to Phoenix, Ariz., a gallon of gas cost a little more than $5 as of Tuesday, per AAA estimates.

“It really comes down to a product of bad timing. There are some refinery problems, refinery maintenance happening in Texas and New Mexico that really hurt a lot of the supply side regionally here in Arizona, and also at the same time OPEC made the decision to cut part of their supply to the global oil market,” Julian Paredes with AAA said, according to Arizona’s Family.
Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, is an organization that works to “coordinate and unify the petroleum policies of its Member Countries and ensure the stabilization of oil markets in order to secure an efficient, economic and regular supply of petroleum to consumers, a steady income to producers and a fair return on capital for those investing in the petroleum industry,” per its website. OPEC’s member countries are Algeria, Angola, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
Outside of Maricopa, counties in the U.S. with average per gallon gas prices exceeding $5 Tuesday included: San Juan County, Ore.; Del Norte County, Calif.; Humboldt County, Calif.; Trinity County, Calif.; Sonoma County, Calif.; Napa County, Calif.; Marin County, Calif., San Francisco County, Calif.; San Mateo County, Calif.; Monterey County, Calif.; San Luis Obispo County, Calif.; Mono County, Calif.; Inyo County, Calif. and Kuai, Hawaii.
California had the highest average gas prices in the nation at around $4.90 per gallon, followed by Arizona at around $4.60.
