Mixed-breed dogs are more popular this year than any single type of pure-bred dog, according to survey results published by Rover for National Dog Day this Saturday.
Overall 60% of those surveyed said their dog was mixed-breed. This trend is increasing, with more Gen Z pet owners (69%) saying that they had a mixed breed dog than pet owners from other generations
After mixed breeds, Labrador retriever, goldendoodle, golden retriever, and German shepherd were the most popular breeds in the U.S., the study said.
However, 42% of dog owners said breed was not an important factor in choosing their pet, though 88% did say that they would choose a dog that is the same breed as their current pet again. Furthermore, 81% said they would have still brought a dog home, even if it wasn’t one of their top-choice breeds. Just 19% said they intentionally chose a mixed breed dog.
What pet parents did care about the most (33%) was that their dog was family-friendly and 58% agreed that breed is a factor in choosing a pet. Many of those surveyed (15% each) also said they wanted cuddly or loyal pets and 14% said they wanted their dog to be intelligent.
Also, a majority (72%) said that their dogs resemble them either in looks and personality.
Even fewer cat owners (30%) said the breed was an important factor in choosing their pet. Instead, nearly half (48%) said that fur color was more impactful. According to Rover, the most popular cat breeds for 2023 are: domestic shorthair, American shorthair and domestic longhair.
