A majority of Americans think that former President Donald Trump should be criminally charged for his role in the January 6 riot at the Capitol.
According to a new Ipsos/ABC News poll, 58% of those surveyed believe that Trump "should be charged with a crime" for the events of January 6. That's up from 52% of respondents who said Trump should be charged back in April.
The poll also found that 58% "believe that Trump bears a good or great amount of responsibility" for the attack. The figure is unchanged from a similar poll back in December.
Partisanship appears to be the largest driver behind these sentiments, with almost all Democrats believing Trump is responsible versus fewer than a quarter of Republicans, according to the poll.
The latest survey comes as the January 6 House committee continues to hold its public hearings investigating the Capitol riot.
The poll found that six in 10 Americans believe the committee is conducting a "fair and impartial" investigation -- even though only 34% of Americans are following the hearings somewhat or very closely.
The findings indicate that despite dramatic hearings over the last two weeks, the American public's attitudes about Trump's culpability in the Capitol riots have remained largely unchanged.
The poll was conducted June 17-18 and is based on a nationally representative probability sample of 545 adults age 18 or older.
