In a world full of political polarization, a new poll has found that a majority of voters would consider voting for a president who doesn’t fit into either the Democrat or Republican party but instead, someone who is from a third party.

The poll comes from Quinnipiac University and found that 47% of respondents would consider voting for a third-party candidate. Additionally, another 47% of respondents told the pollsters that they would not.

Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy is crediting the strong support for a third-party candidate to the failures of the candidates in the last presidential election.

“With neither President Biden nor former President Trump knocking it out of the park on favorability, almost half of the country would consider another option,” Malloy said in a press release.

However, Malloy noted that there is no specific candidate that respondents thought of when asked about voting third-party.

“No specific name for the candidate, no specific designation for the party, but it is a vivid indication that for many voters, the status quo is a no-go,” he added.

When it comes to who said they would vote third-party, the poll found that 35% of Democrats and 38% would consider an outside choice. Among independents, 64% said they would vote third-party.

Despite a majority of Americans wanting new candidates in 2024, the poll found that it will likely be a Trump-Biden rematch, as the president has 71% support among Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters, while Trump has 54% among Republican and Republican-leaning voters.

What’s interesting is that despite respondents supporting the two men, both have low favorability ratings, with only 40% of voters in the poll saying they have a favorable view of Biden, while 38% said the same for Trump.

The poll was conducted July 13-17 with 2,056 adults taking place. There is a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points.
