LOS ANGELES (KNX) - Plastic surgery has been in demand in the U.S. as the country eases out of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a survey results report recently released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

More than 75% of the respondents said that they had seen increased demand for cosmetic procedures compared to pre-pandemic times with 23% reporting that demand had doubled. Only 13% reported a decrease in demand.

Around 17% of 1,850 member surgeons responded to the survey, which was sent in June and highlights changes “noted by plastic surgeons in the 18-month period immediately following the height of the pandemic.” Most of the surgeons who replied to the survey (32%) were from the West Coast, 21% were from the East Coast, 21% were from the Southeast, 16% were from the Southwest and 10% were from the Midwest.

According to the survey the most popular surgical procedures were:

1.       Liposuction

2.       Facelift

3.       Breast augmentation

4.       Tummy tuck

5.       Breast lift

The most common minimally invasive procedures were:

1.      Botulinum toxin type A (sometimes called Botox)

2.       Soft tissue fillers

3.       Noninvasive fat reduction

4.       Nonsurgical skin tightening

5.       Skin care and treatments

“The objective of this report is to provide a window into plastic surgery during a time of rapid social and economic change,” according to the report.

Patients under 30 were the most common patients seeking lip augmentation; patients age 31 to 45 were the most likely to seek tummy tucks, liposuction, breast lifts, breast augmentation and cheek implants, and patients age 45 and older were most likely to seek facelift and eyelid surgery.

Respondents also said that more patients were seeking combination procedures such as those associated with the Mommy Makeover.

Per the study, the top five reasons why patients were motivated to get plastic surgery this year and last year were: that they wanted to feel refreshed and look younger after experiencing pandemic stress, that they had noticed body issues they wanted to change as in-person interaction increases again, that they had put off getting surgery during the pandemic and are now ready, that they wanted to improve their self-esteem or confidence and that they noticed things they wanted to change during video calls.

A reduction in traveling allowed 42% of people to save money for procedures, according to the report. Additionally, 40% of people said they “would pay anything to feel good and more confident following the pandemic.”

“Not only has demand increased, but the amount patients are willing to spend has as well,” survey results revealed. In fact, 50% of respondents said their patients were willing to spend more and 17% saw a substantial increase in patient spending since the pandemic.

However, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons – based in Arlington Heights, Ill. – noted that the Federal Reserve Bank has raised interest rates since the survey closed in an effort to halt inflation. This change in the economic climate could impact plastic surgery trends going forward.

“Plastic surgeons recognize economic uncertainty may ease demand, but they say patient interest is, so far, remaining steady,” said the survey.
