There was a 57% increase nationwide in cars and trucks needing repairs after hitting potholes in 2022 compared to 2021.
Researchers with AAA estimated that 44 million drivers paid for pothole damage in 2022 — compared with 28 million in 2021. Their average bill was $406.
“In many parts of the country, winter roads will likely give way to pothole-laden obstacle courses,” AAA’s director of automotive engineering Greg Brannon said in a press release. “When a vehicle hits a pothole with any kind of force, the tires, wheels and suspension get the brunt of the impact and fixing any of those items is pricey.”
The most common issues for drivers who hit potholes have to do with tire repairs, alignment, wheel and suspension problems.
AAA said checking your tire pressure once per month can help you keep your tires from suffering greater damage. If you do hit a pothole, the agency said it’s worth paying attention to any new or unusual noises or vibrations.
