What was expected to be a brief sentencing hearing for rapper Torey Lanez, convicted of shooting and wounding fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion 3 years ago, turned into a marathon of witnesses testifying on his behalf.

LISTEN

Lanez's father, a Christian minister, asked for mercy from Judge David Herriford, saying his son had suffered for years from the loss of his mother. Raina Cassagne, Lanez's girlfriend, and mother of his 6-year-old son, called him the most supportive father.

Others attesting to Lanez's good character included music executives and heads of non-profit groups he has worked with throughout his career.

A psychologist indicated to the Judge that Lanez suffers from PTSD due to his mother's death, and repeated bouts of alcohol and drug abuse over the years have affected his behavior. The psychologist suggested that Lanze would be a good candidate for treatment at a live-in facility.

The hearing concluded with Deputy DA Kathy Ta reading a two-page statement on behalf of Megan, which said, "Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace. Slowly but surely, I'm healing and coming back, but I will never be the same."

The DA is asking for 13 years in prison for Lanez, and his defense team is calling for an alternative penalty involving probation and being released from jail to enter a residential substance abuse program for a considerable period.

The court hearing will resume at 10:30 Tuesday morning.
