Should internet users be required to show identification in order to access pornographic websites?
That’s a question a number of state legislatures are currently pondering, and one state has already answered the question with a resounding “yes.”
As the calendar turned to 2023, a state law in Louisiana took effect with just such a requirement for residents to be able to view adult content. Sites like PornHub are blocked unless users pass muster through an age verification service that checks their state IDs.
The new law is ostensibly meant to keep children from viewing pornographic material, but obviously also keep out anyone without valid identification.
And the Pelican State may not be alone in its online gatekeeping for long.
Similar laws have been introduced in Florida, Kansas, South Dakota and West Virginia.
