DETROIT, Mich. (WWJ) — Thousands of people have reportedly been killed since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine three weeks ago. Yet former President Donald Trump says there is love behind Vladimir Putin's unrelenting military action.

Trump made the comments Sunday during a radio interview with Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, according to Newsweek.

While discussing the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Trump said there is "a lot of love" behind the Russian president's efforts to "make his country larger."

Trump went on to explain that he thinks Putin's goal is to rebuild the Soviet Union, which collapsed in 1991

"You say, what's the purpose of this? They had a country. You could see it was a country where there was a lot of love and we're doing it because, you know, somebody wants to make his country larger or he wants to put it back the way it was when actually it didn’t work very well," Trump said.

While the former president admitted that what's going on in Ukraine is "just a terrible situation," he added that Putin "never" would have invaded if he were still in office, according to Mediaite.

It's not the first time that his comments on Russia's invasion of Ukraine have drawn backlash. In late February, Trump took some heat after praising Putin as "savvy" and "genius" for launching a military attack on Ukraine.

Even though Trump has not criticized Putin, he has condemned Russia's aggression, describing the killing of Ukrainian civilians as a "holocaust," Business Insider reported.

According to CNN, the Russian bombardment of the southern city of Mariupol alone has caused more than 2,500 deaths.
