Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) spoke to a group of Britney Spears’ supporters Wednesday rallying in Los Angeles, to call for the end of her conservatorship as she headed back to court.
“There’s a lot that still divides us, but one thing we can all agree on is that Jamie Spears is a di**,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) at the Free Britney Rally. “Everytime there’s a hearing in this case that does not result in freedom for Britney Spears and dissolution of this guardianship, it is a black eye on the American justice system.”

“[Jamie Spears] should not have the ability to make any more decisions about his daughter,” Gaetz said, noting she is nearly 40-years-old.
In emotional testimony in June, Britney Spears told a judge she felt the legal arrangement that gives her father Jamie control was abusive and that she wanted it to end. Jamie Spears had been responsible for decisions regarding Britney’s estate and “person” since 2008. In 2019, the court appointed someone else to make her personal decisions.
Gaetz was not billed as a speaker and surprised many by his decision to speak publicly in support of Spears. The Department of Justice is currently investigating the Florida congressman for allegedly violating sex trafficking crimes with a 17-year-old girl.
Gaetz said Britney Spears had been abused “by the media, her grifter father, and the American justice system."
“We need to come together and create a federal cause of action - a federal change in the law - that will free Britney and the millions of Americans who are affected by a corrupt guardianship system that empowers people to take advantage of the weak," Gaetz suggested.

At another hearing for Britney Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles, a judge approved her request to hire her own lawyer in the conservatorship case. Spears also asked the court to charge her father for abusing the conservatorship.
Jamie Spears has called supporters of the “Free Britney” movement conspiracy theorists.
“Britney has a chance because we all love her and care about her,” said Gaetz who was parodied in a Saturday Night Live sketch about Britney Spears earlier this year.
